To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, by Joshua Ferris

Ferris can write, no doubt. And the idea behind this tale lures you in.

Paul O’Rourke, a New York dentist, has issues. Unable to maintain relationships (although he loves each girl’s family), conflicted about his beloved Red Sox, and confused about his belief - or lack thereof - in God.

Then someone “borrows” his identity, creating a web site and social media accounts in his name. Suddenly new questions develop, and Paul begins an inward odyssey.

In parts the book is very funny; in others a little tedious. You’ll likely skim much of the religious history. Still an interesting, humorous read.

BMW 228i Convertible

The whole idea of a convertible is to keep you out of the house as much as possible. BMW succeeded.

Their 228i may be small (good for fitting into tight spaces) but it certainly isn’t shy. You’ll run and gun this puppy sporting one big-ass smile.

With a ragtop you’re saving weight - which leads to a lot of pep - and you’re saving space in the trunk when retracted. The wind deflector allows normal conversation at high speeds.

Great materials inside, a fun (dare I say sexy?) outward charm, and a reasonable starting sticker. But get the upgrades, dude.

Black Mirror

Television has had its share of crap, but lately has really stepped up its game. Black Mirror, a British series of fantastical stand-alone tales, doesn’t score every time, but its ideas and concepts alone are magnificent.

Creator Charlie Brooker mixes technology with satire to create often-frightening glimpses of our near future. Of the existing episodes, in particular you’ll shiver at The Entire History of You, a startling look at saving - and sharing - your memories.

It’s not for everyone - perhaps best to wait for grandma to go to bed - but this is television that makes you think twice.

2015 Mercedes GLA250 4Matic

Listen, it’s a compact crossover, not a hatchback. (Mercedes insists.)

This smaller sib of the GLK, the GLA fits better into garages and small parking spaces. The interior is obviously upscale and comfy, although some of the tech stuff (mouse, pop-up screen, gear selector) takes some adjustment.

The handling is good, the ride is pretty good - perhaps a tad noisy. The anti-idle reacts a bit slow on the restart. Storage space is on the low end.

27 mpg average, and an MSRP of $33k.

Compared to Infiniti, Audi, or BMW the GLA has some work to do.

The Martian, by Andy Weir

Neil and Buzz walked on the moon in 1969. But humans never left Earth orbit again after ‘73, which sucks. We should’ve been on Mars by now.

In Andy Weir’s first novel, we are. But it goes horribly wrong for astronaut Mark Watney. He’s accidentally stranded on the red planet - alone. If he can figure out how to survive for almost two years - with disco music for company - he might get rescued.

This book is smart, technologically fascinating, and damned funny. My favorite book of the past five years. Will the movie with Matt Damon measure up? CAN it?
